DISCOVER AIRCRAFT BUILDING

Thinking about building an aircraft? Not sure how to take the first step? EAA’s new offering, “Discover Aircraft Building” is a weekend course designed just for you. Thru the 2 day workshop experience you will work hands – on with the four most popular methods of homebuilt aircraft construction: Wood, Composite, Fabric and Sheet Metal. You’ll build an individual project and learn the ins and outs of the various techniques. You’ll leave the course at the end of the weekend with a great feeling of accomplishment and the confidence to take the next step, joining over 30,000 other individuals in building your own airplane

The following is a brief outline of the material presented.

The course starts with a detailed discussion of the types of aircraft, how to set up your shop and a review of the rules and regulations involved in building your own aircraft.

The fun begins when you’ll start the construction of an actual wooden wing rib, cutting and fitting the pieces exactly like you would with a real aircraft, in specially made jigs to ensure precise shape and size.

Next you will practice fabric covering when you begin the construction of a fabric covered simulated wing surface. An age old method of aircraft construction that dates back to the Wright Brothers in the early 1900’s,

Once the surface is covered with fabric, it’s coated with special materials. You will actually use the same materials used in the construction or restoration of a fabric covered airplane to finish off the fabric part.

Composite materials are a great choice for building homebuilt aircraft. During the Discover Aircraft Building course you will build a sample composite part and learn the basic techniques of working with resins, laying up reinforcements and bonding parts together.

Sheet Metal Aircraft have fast become the most popular types of homebuilt aircraft today. The speed and ease in which these aircraft can be built is amazing. During this course you will learn the basic techniques of riveting parts – essential in constructing an aircraft like a Vans RV, Sonex, Zenith, Rans and similar types of aluminum aircraft, experiencing first hand, the tools and techniques used.

All tools, materials and supplies are included. A comprehensive workbook is also included with the program

Class size is limited to insure individualized instruction. At the end of this program you will be very familiar with all methods of airplane construction and you will also know what is required to build or restore your airplane.
